This study evaluates planned activities training for teaching parenting skills to a mother reported for child abuse.
Abstract
A Spanish-speaking mother reported for child abuse of her 6-year-old son and referred by child protective services received, in their home, Spanish training protocols consisting of child health care training, planned activities training (PAT), and home safety training. Following training, the mother met criteria in all training components. Although PAT was conducted with the mother and her youngest child only, the mother reported decreases in negative interactions between the oldest (untreated) child and his parents. In addition, there was a dramatic reduction in home safety hazards in all of the rooms evaluated as part of the program. The mother rated positively the content of the training protocols, training strategies, and the counselor who provided training. Follow-up observations indicated that treatment gains were maintained.
