These are the materials given to participants in a workshop designed to increase awareness and develop an understanding of the principles of effective corrections intervention and the application of these principles in dealing with offenders.
Abstract
A statement of workshop goals and objectives indicates that at the conclusion of the workshop participants will be able to identify and discuss the goals of corrections within the criminal justice system; explore the empirical basis for correctional interventions in managing risk and promoting public safety; examine the implication of these interventions for correctional management and programs; and develop strategies for applying the principles in dealing with offenders. The first section of materials provides an overview of treatment effectiveness and addresses the principles of effective intervention with offenders as well as programmatic and non-programmatic aspects of successful intervention. Another section of materials addresses contemporary sentencing policies and community corrections. A third section considers what works in community corrections, risk-needs assessment and treatment, risk prediction, and the validation of risk-assessment instruments used in community corrections. The fourth section of materials focuses on programs for abusive men (guidelines for service development and implementation). Other material covers intensive rehabilitation supervision and classification for effective rehabilitation.
