This volume presents the agenda, presentation objectives and content summaries, and other materials from a national conference on child abuse and neglect, held in 1998 and sponsored by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.
Abstract
Participants included approximately 900 attorneys, physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, child protective services workers, police personnel, educators, and allied practitioners. The presentations and training sessions focused on media coverage of child abuse and neglect, child abuse prevention, the detection of child abuse or neglect, treatment techniques for abused children and abusers, and methods of improving decision-making in child protective services through the use of risk assessment models. Other sessions focused on the relationships between mental health and criminal justice professionals, the prosecution of child sexual abuse cases, and methods for preventing and addressing physical and sexual abuse in black families. Further sessions examined juvenile sexual offending, structured decision-making for foster care, the impact of domestic violence on children, and the development of racial and cultural equity in child protection.
