Policy statements and resolutions of the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) address major interests and concerns of the organization's membership on contemporary crime and criminal justice issues.
Abstract
The policy statements and resolutions recognize the importance of collaborative working relationships between components of the criminal justice system and other public, private, and community organizations. Further, they emphasize the need for system accountability and adequate resources to address specific crime problems. Policy statements focus on decreasing violence and fear in society, the media's role in public education, the community's role in crime prevention, options for addressing prison crowding, victim-witness assistance, juvenile delinquency prevention, the increased use of treatment options, and the use of information technology to support criminal justice planning and operations. Resolutions articulate the NCJA's position on the reauthorization of Federal criminal and juvenile justice and crime victim assistance grant programs for States and local governments, the enactment of Federal legislation to establish a waiting period for handgun purchases, and the reinstatement of State status for U.S. insular areas and territorial possessions for the purpose of receiving Federal criminal justice assistance.
