Recent technological developments in use by or under consideration for use by law enforcement organizations include: (1) Personal Locator Transmitter, which provides a constant location and communication ability between an officer and central command station; (2) Remote Control Information System, a device originally developed for medics in the military, it provides full-color video and two-way audio, and incorporates GPS for officer location and a system to monitor an individual's vital signs; (3) Timeline Analysis System to visually analyze data for cause-and-effect relationships, trends and patterns; (4) neural networks that can solve problems by developing associations between objects; (5) portable computers the size of credit cards that can aid in security access, identification and data management and retrieval; (6) a software program to facilitate examination and comparison of rifling marks on fired projectiles; and (7) speech-processing technologies that identify and route signals, identify persons by voice characteristics and separate noise from speech with a minimum of distortion to the speech.
