This article discusses some current developments in the search for improved police education, training and formal qualifications of police officers in Australia.
Abstract
In March 1990, the commissioners of all Australian police services agreed upon a statement of future direction for police education, emphasizing professionalism, public trust, coordination and uniform national standards. The Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM) now offers three tiers of training in leadership and management, aimed particularly at public safety agency professionals. The Australian Graduate School of Police Management (AGSPM) conducts its educational programs entirely off-campus. The AGSPM's students are nearly all sworn officers of various police agencies, working in places from the Indian Ocean to New Zealand and from Papua New Guinea to Tasmania. The nexus between AGSPM and AIPM has grown steadily in form and strength since their founding. They share many resources and personnel from the two bodies interact freely and contribute to the work of both.
