This resource manual, which accompanies a guide for evaluating drug treatment programs, includes steps in a team approach to evaluation, guidelines for computing program costs, sample data-collection forms, standard statistical tables, and additional resources.
Abstract
The steps in using a team approach to evaluation involve organizing the team, a time line for planning and conducting an evaluation, planning and conducting a pre-evaluation staff retreat, and samples of team-meeting agendas. Instructions in computing program costs cover costs of the total program and of each component. The discussion guides the user in completing each section of the cost worksheet, which encompasses the cost of staff salaries, fringe-benefit contributions, overhead costs, other direct costs, and total costs. Another section profiles data collection forms that may be useful in planning an evaluation. Prior research has proven these instruments to be both reliable and valid, and the forms can provide data for various types of substance-abusing populations. For each instrument, the manual provides its title; a brief description; the name, address, and phone number of the developer; the person to contact for inquiries; life areas assessed; access; and price. A fourth section contains four standard statistical tables to aid in the evaluation analysis; the titles of the tables are Random Number, Critical Values of the X squared distribution, Critical Values of the Student's t Distribution, and Critical Values of the Correlation Coefficient. Four additional resource publications are listed. For other individual documents in the series, see NCJ-175871-72; and for the complete packet, see NCJ- 175870.
