This report presents recommendations of an expert group of the United Nations regarding national and international crime surveys and the collection of data on crime, crime prevention, and criminal justice, based on its meeting in March 1997.
Abstract
The group recommended that all countries designate or establish national offices for collecting data for United Nations surveys of crime trends and criminal justice systems and that the questionnaire for the Sixth United Nations Survey and subsequent surveys be shortened and simplified. It also recommended the preparation of an inventory of existing sources of information on transnational crime and the integration of data on transnational crime with other United Nations data. Another recommendation was to establish an advisory group and standing expert group to implement technical cooperation through teleconferencing, videoconferencing, the use of the Internet. Further recommendations focused on a survey of national capacities for the collection of data on crime prevention and criminal justice and the streamlining of a manual on developing and analyzing criminal justice statistics.
