The Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services have developed this Crime Victimization Survey (CVS) software to assist local agencies in administering community-level citizen surveys.
Abstract
This software has been designed for local law enforcement agencies and criminal justice researchers who wish to collect citizen information by using the standardized questions from the National Crime Victimization Survey. The software also includes questions that address citizen attitudes toward their neighborhood, public safety, and the police. This CD-ROM contains the software and supporting materials needed to install the software and conduct surveys. The "User's Manual" and "Conducting Community Surveys: A Practical Guide for Law Enforcement" are in portable document format, which requires the installation on the user's computer of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. A copy of the Acrobat Reader is included on the CD-ROM. A booklet that accompanies the CD-ROM lists the PC specifications required to run the survey software. The booklet also provides step-by-step instructions for installing the CVS software either as a "stand-alone" installation (installation on a single PC that will not share data with other PCs with a CVS installation) or a multi-user installation (installation of shared files on a shared network drive). After installing the software, several administrative tasks, such as generating a dial list and creating user identifications for the interviews, must be completed before using the software to conduct interviews.
