Abstract
The subject matter of the conference was divided into four thematic headings: crime in the period of rapid social change, the fear of crime in post-communist societies, new forms of crime in the period of transition from communist to free-market economy, and problems of terrorism in Europe. Changes in crime and crime control under rapid economic and social change are discussed for Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Romania, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Europe in general. Other papers discuss crime development and the fear of crime in post-communist societies, criminal law reform in post-communist societies, new forms of crime in the period of transformation from socialist to the market economy, the control of economic crime, and criminal law conventions of the Council of Europe as instruments in the fight against new forms of crime. Other topics considered are cooperation between criminal organizations and terrorists, the future development of terrorism in Europe, and single-issue terrorism. The theme of the panel discussion was how to deal with the future of the crime problem in Europe. A summary of the proceedings is also provided.
