The National Women's Law Center has developed a strategy to deal with sexual misconduct against female inmates that concerns the enforcement of court orders and technical assistance and training for both female inmates and correctional officials.
Abstract
Designed to help female inmates identify and address sexual misconduct against them, the handbook contains information on how to recognize sexual misconduct. It also covers physical and emotional effects of sexual misconduct (contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and emotional trauma) and third-party victims of sexual misconduct. The handbook outlines what females can do to prevent or stop sexual misconduct, including informal, formal administrative, and legal actions. In addition, the handbook identifies other factors to consider by female inmates in sexual misconduct cases, such as retaliation by prison staff and the need for a support system. Finally, the handbook deals with the importance of medical assistance and lists resources that may be helpful in obtaining more information about State laws or in reporting sexual misconduct in prisons. Appendixes contain a list of State attorneys general and a survey of State laws prohibiting the sexual abuse of prisoners.
