The Newark Target Cities project has several features that arise out of the unique social and economic realities of drug abuse treatment in Newark. The drug-abusing population of Newark presents the city with a unique public health problem because many clients have a variety of medical problems that must be diagnosed and treated in conjunction with their drug abuse. A key element in the project is a medical evaluation during the initial assessment of clients seeking drug treatment services at the Central Intake Unit. In addition, the project involves a consortium that consists of 10 agencies providing a range of services and treatment modalities. Project efforts to centralize intake into drug treatment and facilitate collaboration via the consortium of agencies are described. 2 references
