This collection of articles is designed to serve as a road map for those who want to start or strengthen community policing and includes a broad range of perspectives on COPPS (Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving).
Abstract
The collection includes how to use community mapping to capture the energies of positive resources in the community and covers how to recruit, train, and evaluate community policing officers; how to deal with sensitive multicultural issues; and how to strengthen the community's role. The collection also presents ideas for using community policing to deal with special problems, such as domestic violence, racial tensions, and juvenile crime. One article features the most recent developments and best community policing practices of five diverse California communities, and additional selections profile examples from other parts of the United States. The collection is organized according to eight sections: (1) cornerstones of community policing; (2) management strategies to further the COPPS movement; (3) creating a dynamic community policing organization; (4) strengthening the community's role; (5) building bonds in culturally diverse communities; (6) reaching beyond the police to reduce crime; (7) the role of community policing in violence prevention; and (8) cutting-edge research and evaluation.
