The treatment readiness program was developed and implemented as part of a 5-year project known as Cognitive Enhancements for the Treatment of Probationers (CETOP). The focus of the CETOP project was a 140-bed residential treatment program at the Tarrant County Community Correctional Facility in Mansfield, Texas. Probationers with drug problems were sent to the 16-week program in lieu of being sent to prison. Probationers admitted to the facility between May 1996 and October 1997 formed the study sample. They were randomly assigned to receive a standard or an enhanced treatment readiness program. The enhanced program was given favorable overall ratings, and the low education group in this condition rated their mid-term improvements in motivation and confidence as being higher than the group receiving the standard program.
