Part I, "European Prospects," contains four papers on the prospects for crime and crime control in Europe, with attention to the influence of economic, political, and social factors on crime and responses to it. Although expressing a degree of pessimism regarding the future of the more vulnerable social groups in Europe, the possibility of moving toward a shared sense of a common European citizenship is also discussed. Part II, "Penality and Criminal Justice," contains eight papers on topics confronting criminologists and social reformers alike. Among the topics discussed are the inadequacy of France's penal system in responding to problem youth, changes in the use of imprisonment, current thinking about the function of punishment, and the difficulties of providing equal justice in a society where people are not treated equally. Part III, "Criminal Business," has five papers that focus on recent developments in the economic sphere of organized criminal business in Europe; and the seven chapters of Part IV consider specific localities in which the validity of various criminological concepts and trends may be assessed. Part V, entitled "Horizons," has five papers that identify future challenges and opportunities for criminology in Europe. The need for environmental criminology and a new criminology of war are among the topics considered. Chapter notes and references and a subject index
