This is the second of three reports that evaluate the prisoner classification system used by the California Department of Corrections (CDC).
Abstract
This study sought to determine whether the usual classification scores were related to misconduct for female inmates and whether placement affected misconduct. It also investigated ways in which the current classification system may be improved. The study paid considerable attention to the facilities to which prisoners were assigned. Security levels as such were not salient for female prisoners. Inmates who were younger at admission displayed increased misconduct, as did inmates who did not have an intact relationship prior to incarceration. New prisoners convicted of violent offenses were more likely to misbehave during their first placement. Prisoners with a record of drug abuse in prison, psychiatric treatment, and gang involvement either in or out of prison were much more likely to misbehave. Prisoners’ past behaviors were good predictors of future behavior. Tables, figures
