Abstract
The article outlines major program parameters and intervention techniques endorsed by contemporary models. It makes recommendations for advancing family-based prevention in key areas: targeting high-risk and adolescent populations, customizing interventions for individual families, working with multiple social systems and integrating knowledge from the fields of prevention and treatment. Standard features of family-based prevention include adopting intensive family engagement and retention procedures, attending to parents’ personal issues, working to bolster family strengths and competencies, presenting information about normative child development, and providing skills-based training that includes both parent- and family-focused interventions.
