Designed for use by sheriffs and police officers, the videotape offers tips on recognizing situations of child abuse in the home; indicators of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; initial child interviewing; procedures for investigating and reporting abuse; evidence collection and preparation; and collaboration with child protective services. The videotape specifically highlights the important role of first responder can have in making a successful case in child abuse investigations. In addition, the videotape identifies the following roles and responsibilities of a first responder: ensure child safety, avoid revictimizing the child, collect evidence, recognize signs of abuse, be aware of State laws, and understand the roles of other professionals. Finally, the videotape covers various facets of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse of children and examines the need to be sensitive to cultural differences when conducting child abuse investigations.
