Data on prison population projections for England and Wales indicate the prison population will total 80,300 in the year 2007.
Abstract
The projections assume that custody rates increase at 0.6 percent per year for males and 1 percent for females and that sentence lengths increase annually by 1.5 percent for males and 2 percent for females. These assumptions lead to a prison population of 80,300 in the year 2007. If custody rates increase according to these assumptions but sentence lengths stay at 1999 levels, the prison population will total 74,400 in the year 2007. If custody rates and sentence lengths remain at 1999 levels, the prison population will total 70,400 in the year 2007. 4 notes and 3 tables
