Community-oriented policing has become the paradigm of policing, the concept on which all police initiatives and academic study in policing have been focused on for the past 15 years, and this textbook takes the reader through a historical review of police and community relations and demonstrates how the concept of community-oriented policing has evolved.
Abstract
The textbook presents community-oriented policing in both theoretical and applied contexts. The first chapter includes a historical review of police and community relations since the formation of the United States. The second chapter is the guiding chapter for the rest of the textbook in that it attempts to provide a clear understanding of what community-oriented policing is and how is defined in theoretical and practical terms. The next four chapters concentrate on identifying each component of community-oriented policing with respect to strategic-oriented policing, neighborhood-oriented policing, problem-oriented policing, and integration. Subsequent chapters examine police organization and management, the role of the police, the role of the community, the implementation and evaluation of community-oriented policing, and the future of community-oriented policing. Finally, the textbook covers community-oriented policing as a systemic approach to policing. References, tables, figures, and photographs
