Intended for use by members of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) in cooperation with a NA resource person, this book explains the concepts underlying each of NA's 12 steps to a drug-free life and what is involved in the practical application of each step.
Abstract
These guides are meant to be used by NA members at any stage of recovery. It is relevant both to newcomers and to more experienced members who wish to develop a deeper understanding of the 12 steps. The first step involves the process of admitting that one is powerless over one's addiction, as it is out of control. Step two involves entering into the belief that a power beyond and greater than oneself can help overcome the addiction; step three involves a decision by the NA member to turn over his/her will and life to the "care of God as we understood Him." Step four consists of making a "searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves"; and step five focuses on admitting to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of "our wrongs." Step six involves entrusting God to engage the NA member in the process of removing the character defects identified in the moral inventory. The remaining steps involve the implementation of this process of moral transformation through prayer and meditation, making a list of all persons one has harmed and developing strategies for making amends, continuing to take a personal inventory and acknowledging continuing moral failures, and making a commitment to provide assistance to other addicts.
