This report presents data on crimes reported to or detected by New South Wales (NSW) police from January 1997 to December 1999; the data were extracted from the Computerized Operational Policing System of the NSW Police Service in January 2000.
Abstract
Overall, the data showed there were no significant upward trends in recorded crime for selected offense categories. Further, 7 of the 16 major offense categories exhibited downward trends. Between 1998 and 1999, substantial decreases were recorded in the number of recorded incidents of sexual assault, armed robbery, break and enter offenses, and motor vehicle theft in NSW. No statistically significant upward or downward trends were observed in the monthly number of recorded criminal incidents for the following offenses: murder, assault, robbery without a weapon, stealing from a motor vehicle, stealing from a retail store, stealing from a person, fraud, and malicious damage to property. Appendixes provide supplemental information on offenses, maps, and local government areas in statistical divisions of NSW. 36 tables and 9 figures
