Overall, the data showed there were no significant upward trends in recorded crime for selected offense categories. Further, 7 of the 16 major offense categories exhibited downward trends. Between 1998 and 1999, substantial decreases were recorded in the number of recorded incidents of sexual assault, armed robbery, break and enter offenses, and motor vehicle theft in NSW. No statistically significant upward or downward trends were observed in the monthly number of recorded criminal incidents for the following offenses: murder, assault, robbery without a weapon, stealing from a motor vehicle, stealing from a retail store, stealing from a person, fraud, and malicious damage to property.
