This book examines the role of fairness in social life, what people mean by justice, and how it influences their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Abstract
The book is divided into five parts: (1) Introduction; (2) Is Justice Important to People’s Feelings and Attitudes? (3) Behavioral Reactions to Justice and Injustice; (4) Why Do People Care About Justice? and (5) When Does Justice Matter? The book discusses justice as a philosophical, theological and subjective issue, the framework of social justice research and the field of social justice. An examination of relative deprivation and why it is important also reviews comparisons with other people, individual versus group relative deprivation and conceptualizing social identities. Other topics are as follows: distributive, procedural, and retributive justice; psychological versus behavioral responses to injustice; the nature of the justice motive; theories of justice, evidence from research and policy implications; social structural influences and social context effects; a culture-specific perspective; evidence from empirical research; and multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice.
