These 22 papers provide an overview of developments and issues related to the abuse of elderly persons and present guidelines for the best clinical practices, interagency collaboration, awareness raising, and other approaches for addressing this issue in Great Britain and Canada.
Abstract
The chapters analyze research, theory, policy development, legislation, practice issues, resources, and new ideas. Specific topics include clinical practice developments, coordination across agencies, self-help for older people, efforts to increase awareness of elder abuse, and financial abuse. Additional papers present the perspectives of victims, social workers, the police, and prosecutors. Further chapters focus on the protection of people whose mental capacity may be impaired by learning difficulties of mental disorder such as dementia, the role of alcohol in elder abuse, and the prevention of elder abuse in long-term care. Other articles examine the role of support groups in providing human connection for abused older adults and discuss the planning of a shelter for abused seniors. The chapters also provide both ideas and tested exercises for training. Contributors come from both voluntary and statutory agencies, as well as academic institutions.
