The document draws attention to some of the methodological issues involved in using survey data for measuring and characterizing violence against women. It compares annual incidence rates and contextual characteristics of intimate-partner violence against women from the National Crime Victimization Survey and the National Violence Against Women Survey. It also provides information about the breadth of potential data sources for collecting State and local data from the public health perspective. Notably, it discusses the limitations of the International Classification of Diseases system for gathering data on violence against women. Complementing the health-based focus is a table of detailed State-level information about data collection systems from a criminal justice perspective. It indicates for each State which criminal justice and service-provider-based systems are available or in development for both sexual assault and domestic violence. Notes, references, tables
