In Jersey City, the DMA program has been used to identify 215 intersections and street segments as drug sales areas and is helping city police identify the locations of emerging drug markets. In Kansas City, Mo., city police are using DMA to support an innovative narcotics enforcement strategy aimed at reducing the violence and disorder associated with retail drug sales in residential neighborhoods. In San Diego, DMA is helping police identify divisions with the highest drug dealing activity by drug type, as well as plan special operations to attack these drug sales points. In Pittsburgh, DMA provides police with the ability to organize and retrieve information on calls for service, criminal incidents, and arrest data by geographic location; and in Hartford, DMA is supporting a neighborhood-oriented policing approach. Under a grant from the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Institute for Law and Justice (ILJ) will next study NIJ's DMA program in these five cities to determine what will be needed to transfer these programs to other jurisdictions.
