The review of community policing in the 1990's addresses emerging forms of community policing, how community-policing concepts have been implemented in various cities, and current NIJ research and evaluation that deal with community policing. The article that profiles community policing in Seattle focuses on the model partnership between citizens and police; program and research recommendations are offered. Another article describes the Bureau of Justice Assistance's Innovative Neighborhood-Oriented Policing program. The eight INOP projects target such common problems as open drug sales in the streets, related crime, and other unwanted activity in surrounding neighborhoods. The NIJ research plan for these INOP projects is described. Another article describes the proposed NIJ research on the daily activities of foot-patrol officers under community policing philosophy. The next article reports on NIJ's long-term research on the causes and correlates of criminal behavior, so as to advance knowledge on how to predict and prevent crime.
