The data came from reports developed by the State’s Center for Information Technologies and by Community Corrections. An average of 27,168 State offenders were in Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions in May 2000, a decrease of 0.1 percent from the 27,200 average inmate population in the previous month and a 1.8 percent increase from the average population recorded a year earlier. The average number of out-of-state offenders housed in contract beds was 3,344 in May 2000. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 30,512 offenders. The total probation and parole caseload of 37,951 in May 2000 included 5,603 active parolees and 32,348 active probationers. The total caseload increased 0.06 percent from the previous month.
