This paper contains information for participants in the 10th United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, April 2000.
Abstract
In addition to procedural and organizational matters, the paper discusses the general theme, agenda and program of work for the Congress. Agenda items include: (1)promoting the rule of law and strengthening criminal justice systems; (2) international cooperation in combating transnational crime; (3) keeping pace with new developments in preventing crime; and (4) accountability and fairness in the justice process. In addition, technical workshops would discuss combating corruption, community involvement in crime prevention, women in the criminal justice system and crimes related to the computer network. The following categories of participants were to participate in the Congress: representatives of states, representatives of organizations that have received a standing invitation to participate as observers, representatives of United Nations organs and related agencies, observers designated by other intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, individual experts and consultants invited by the Secretary General and officials of the United Nations Secretariat.
