Following an introductory chapter that provides some information about the state of domestic violence and responses to it in Great Britain today, a chapter provides an overview of the main legal remedies, both civil and criminal, for spouses, partners, children, and others who may be affected by violent domestic conflict. These general protections are then developed in relation to areas where specialist knowledge is essential: non-molestation orders and occupation of the family home; enforcement of court orders; and the provisions on protection from harassment, including an explanation of the restraining order and the unique "twin track" approach to criminal and civil relief. The concluding chapter presents some strategies for preventing domestic violence. Among the suggestions pertinent to prevention are education in the schools, the training of appropriate professionals in recognizing and responding to symptoms of abuse, and the development of projects that target the particular needs and circumstances of victims and perpetrators of abuse in the home.
