The 100 crime prevention programs described in this volume all have one or another of the following elements: strategies that support action, joint action that has reduced crime, or initiatives likely to provide a basis for ongoing action. They were chosen for how clearly they demonstrate both content and processes likely to encourage replication and/or adaptation of crime prevention programs. Strategies for supporting action include national and regional policies as well as joint actions by cities. Joint initiatives by cities, countries, or particular sectors (schools, social services, housing, etc.) have reduced the incidence of one or more specific crimes by focusing on at-risk individuals (potential criminals or victims), places (public spaces, high-risk housing projects), or mechanism (reparation, street-proofing). Initiatives likely to provide a basis for action focus on areas such as support for families, children, or teenagers; interventions to break the cycle of intergenerational and gender violence; and options that encourage individual and community responsibility. The document provides a broad outline of each of the 100 programs as well as data on four main categories of actors in each program: Administrations, Services Sector, Formal Intervention System, and Private Enterprise.
