The monitoring provides not only real-time information, but the data are archived and retrievable should it be necessary to reconstruct a scenario for follow-up or investigative purposes. In the event a correctional staff member perceives that he/she is in immediate danger, that individual can send an alarm by pressing a button on a small pager-like device that is worn on the belt. This signal is received at the central control monitoring station, alerting the station officer that immediate response is required. The system continuously accounts for and identifies by name all inmates within the institution, thus enabling staff to know when an inmate is out of place. It is this last capability that promises to become the accountability and management tool corrections personnel have long sought. This technology may have even greater potential when used with smart-card technology. Smart cards can be programmed to allow or deny inmate access at certain points in a facility that otherwise would have to be monitored or physically controlled by staff. The potential payoff for improved correctional management and cost savings for taxpayers are significant.
