The articles in this magazine focus on the Weed and Seed program, highlights projects that are mobilizing and educating youth and training them to be strong community leaders, and describes Weed and Seed sites that are making progress in integrating the education of both adults and children into their crime prevention strategies.
Abstract
Individual articles focus on ways to prevent children's access to handguns, the Youth Advisory Council established by the Executive Office for Weed and Seed and the National Congress for Community Economic Development, and a day of community service in Buffalo, N.Y., on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. Additional articles describe the renovation of a gymnasium for use as the Safe Haven in Vernon, Tex.; the National Drug Education for Youth Train-the-Trainer Conference in March 2000; and the creation of handwritten messages by youth on advertising spaces on buses in Richmond, Va. Further articles discuss projects in Racine, Wisc., Selma, Calif., and Springfield, Ill.; police-community relations efforts; and programs that use youth as resources and leaders through student courts and others.
