The Prison Partnership established by Habitat for Humanity (HFH) helps correctional systems and offenders to develop communities by building homes and rebuilding lives through the efforts of offender-volunteers who work with homeowners and free-world volunteers while developing marketable job skills and learning new ways of behaving and living.
Abstract
The HFH International’s Prison Partnership began in July 1999 and arose from the need for the nationwide coordination of prison partnerships. It also serves as the resource center for HFH affiliates, correctional systems, prison ministries, and others. Illinois, Michigan, Texas, and Wisconsin have particularly dynamic prison partnerships. Offender-volunteers at 75 prison partnerships nationally built or contributed to the building of 250 homes during 1999. The offender-volunteers’ participation is voluntary. Offenders receive no credit or other forms of sentence reduction in exchange for volunteering with HFH. The correctional community is crucial to the program. Photograph
