Abstract
In 1992, the New York State Department of Correctional Services reorganized the delivery of program services to the inmate population, including grouping correctional facilities by geographical proximity into administrative regions (HUBs). This report presents a profile of the inmate population within each region, briefly describes the characteristics of the total population under custody and lists the range of values found across the nine administrative HUBs on a selected set of variables. Inmates' demographic characteristics include gender, age, race/ethnic status, region, birthplace, marital status, number of living children, religious affiliation, and veteran status. Their criminal history includes minimum sentence, crime, second felony sentencing status, adult criminal record, length of time served at current facility, length of time in department custody and time to earliest release. Program-relevant characteristics include reading proficiency, academic degree status, English language proficiency, alcoholism and drug use. Notes. figures, tables, appendixes
