This article examines local crime and disorder strategies in the U.K.
Abstract
The U.K. government's 1998 Crime and Disorder Act gave local authorities a statutory duty to develop and implement 3-year (subsequently changed to 5-year) strategies to tackle local crime and disorder problems in partnership with other local agencies, notably the police. This article reviews local crime audits and proposed strategies published on the Internet. The review is selective because not all district local authorities have Internet information sources and, of those that do, not all have considered such sites useful for the promotion or publication of their local audits and strategies. The article briefly considers audit and strategy documents of a small number of sites, drawing attention to some of the more important issues: (1) the kind of authority; (2) how data are presented and analyzed; (3) the extent of partnership evident in the documentation; (4) the crime and disorder issues that dominate; (5) the degree of local consultation and the extent to which consultation influenced selection or identification of strategic priorities; and (6) identification of strategic priorities as either evidence-based or value-driven.
