The Michigan State Police (MSP) have tested a variety of patrol vehicles, including police package (pursuit capable) and special service package patrol vehicles, since 1978 and tested both carryover and new police vehicles for 2001.
Abstract
The tests focused on acceleration to 100 miles per hour, top speed, braking from 60 miles per hour, lap times on a road-racing course, ergonomic and communications installation issues, and Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy ratings. The acceleration, top speed, and braking tests take place at Chrysler’s Chelsea Proving Ground in Chelsea, MI. The vehicle dynamics testing moved this year to the 2-mile road course at Grattan Raceway in Belding, MI. The recent tests focused on two new police vehicles for 2001 (Chevrolet Tahoe and the police package AM General Hummer from General Motors); several mostly carryover models (Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Impala, Jeep Cherokee, Ford Expedition, Ford Excursion); and the new 2002 model Ford Explorer. The Chevrolet Impala had the shortest stopping distance of the police sedans. The Jeep Cherokee is the only sport utility vehicle rated for pursuit driving. The Ford Police Interceptor had the quickest acceleration and highest top speed among the police sedans. Tables and photographs
