The paper identifies current trends in workplace violence, emerging issues, and the controversies that have arisen during the past 30 years. It gives an historical context in which to examine current and emerging issues related to workplace violence. It also introduces a number of new and emerging issues raised by other contributors to this edition of the Security Journal, and points out interrelationships between these issues that may not be immediately obvious. The paper identifies emerging trends that should be addressed in future workplace violence research and management. The paper defines workplace violence and describes four types: intrusive, consumer, relationship, and organizational. The paper summarizes 12 key issues in workplace violence including the impact of organizational violence on individuals and whole communities. It also identifies two future trends that need to be addressed: "cyber violence"--the use of e-mail and the world-wide-web to harass, degrade, and humiliate workers; and the bullying of older workers by employers in an attempt to force them to leave, so they can be replaced by younger, cheaper, more technologically sophisticated staff.
