Polygraph technique and practice have advanced steadily during the 20th century. The polygraph is an extremely helpful adjunct to sex offender treatment in North America, influencing offenders on a cognitive-behavioral level to change their attitudes and beliefs and thereby to facilitate change in their lifestyles, associations, and values. Leading futures in sex offender assessment and treatment have endorsed polygraph testing. The benefits of a well-managed clinical polygraph examination program in the United Kingdom appear to be substantial. A board or council should monitor the development and use of polygraphy and should ensure adherence to identified standards. The analysis concludes that the careful introduction of polygraphy would positively affect the quality and success of sex offender treatment programs in Great Britain and notes that the West Midlands Probation Service’s Sex Offender Unit has initiated a substantial pilot program using the support and guidelines of the American Polygraph Association.
