This Departmental Forecast Report of New Zealand's Ministry of Justice for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2001, addresses the Ministry's projected criminal justice strategies and financial statements.
Abstract
The Ministry has identified six key priorities for 2000-2001. They are to reduce youth crime and burglary; reduce justice sector gaps for Maori and Pacific peoples; assist crime victims and improve the effectiveness of sentences; enhance human rights; improve the administration of parliamentary elections; and pursue the Treaty of Waitangi negotiations and relationships. The latter involves historical Treaty claims that pertain to the rights of the Maori people of New Zealand. The forecast financial statements include those specified by Section 34A of the Public Finance Act of 1989. There is a statement of the estimated financial position of the Ministry as of June 30, 2000, and June 30, 2001. A forecast statement of financial performance reflects the forecast revenue and expenses of the Ministry for the year ending June 30, 2001. There is also a forecast statement of cash flows for the year ending June 30, 2001. A statement of objectives for the fiscal year specifies financial and nonfinancial performance and expected revenue and costs for each class of outputs to be achieved. Other statements are presented as necessary for a fair reflection of the forecast financial operations of the Ministry and its forecast financial position for the year ending June 30, 2001. The concluding section of this report contains background information on the Ministry, including ownership issues and organizational structure.
