Abstract
This is a reworked version of a paper presented to the symposium organized for Institut des Hautes Etudes de la Securite Interieure's 10th anniversary. Using examples from the American experience, this article explores the meaning of the apparently shrinking role of the public in community-oriented crime prevention. Also examined is the role that ideally should be played by a police force that is capable of reconciling public services and authority. 8 references
