This volume presents statistics on young offenders and the South Australia juvenile justice system for calendar year 1999.
Abstract
The volume includes data in six main areas: (1) police apprehensions of juveniles and actions taken; (2) formal cautions administered by police; (3) attendance by juveniles at family conferences; (4) appearances by juveniles before the Youth Court; (5) community service orders and mandates serviced by the Family and Youth Services Division of the Department of Human Services; and (6) juveniles held in custody in the Youth Training Centers. Data were obtained from the South Australia Police, the Courts Administration Authority, and Family and Youth Services. During 1999 there were 8,753 police apprehension reports involving young people, which was similar to the 8,689 reports in 1998 but 13.5 percent lower than the peak of 10,118 recorded in 1995. The majority of juvenile apprehensions involved males (80.3 percent) and youths aged 16 and older (51.7 percent). Aboriginal youths accounted for 16.8 percent of those apprehension reports where this information was recorded. Major allegations included larceny and receiving, mainly larceny from shops and larceny/illegal use of vehicle; offenses against good order; and burglary, break and enter.
