Abstract
This bulletin reports notifiable offenses recorded by the police in both England and Wales during a 12-month period ending September 2000. The offenses covered a wide range of crimes, from homicide to minor theft and damage. During these 12 months the police in England and Wales recorded a total of 5.2 million offenses. The majority of crimes were property offenses. Violent crimes accounted for 14 percent of all offenses recorded. The remaining recorded crimes included drug offenses, public order offenses, and those involved in perverting the course of justice. Major findings included: (1) recorded crime fell by 0.2 percent during the 12 month reporting period at which 83 percent of these offenses were against property, and 14 percent were violent crimes; (2) 26 of the 43 forces recorded fewer crimes than in the previous period which included eight of the 10 most rural forces and eight metropolitan forces collectively recorded a 1 percent increase; (3) violent crime rose by 8 percent but the rate of increase was coming down, violence against a person rose by 7 percent and robbery rose by 21 percent, but sexual offenses fell by 0.4 percent (its first fall in 5 years); (4) thefts of vehicles fell by 7 percent and thefts from vehicles fell by 6 percent; and (5) burglary fell 8 percent (its seventh consecutive decrease), and domestic burglary fell by 10 percent and non-domestic fell by 5 percent.
