This report provides data on the correctional population in Virginia as of the end of December 2000, including inmate, probationer, and parolee statistics.
Abstract
The average number of Virginia State-responsible offenders incarcerated in Department of Corrections (DOC) institutions in December 2000 was 27,259, a 0.05-percent decrease from the 27,272 average inmate population in custody in November and a 1.4-percent increase from the average population (26,883) recorded 1 year ago. In December 2000, the average number of out-of-State offenders housed in contract beds was 3,497. The total average daily population in DOC institutions was 30,756 offenders. A total caseload of 39,103 probationers and parolees was reported for December 2000, with 5,148 active parolees and 33,955 active probationers. This is a 1.1-percent increase from the 38,686 active probation and parole caseloads reported for November 2000. Data are presented in tabular form by region and institution.
