This book outlines the correctional systems of seven countries within the Asia-Pacific region.
Abstract
The book provides data on the correctional systems of China (Hong Kong), Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Data are presented in narrative and tabular formats on the following: (1) Organizational Structure, Establishment and Staff Strength; (2) Features of Inmates; (3) Security in Correctional Institutions; (4) Living Conditions of Inmates; (5) Prison Work; (6) Treatment Programs; (7) Release of Inmates; (8) Effectiveness of Treatment of Inmates; (9) Staff's Recruitment, Salary, Training, and Promotion; and (10) Current Problems in the Correctional Administration and Countermeasures. The book suggests use of these data in comparative studies of the seven countries' correctional systems with correctional systems in other countries, considering methods to improve or promote national administrations. Further, the book is intended as a foundation from which criminal justice officials throughout Asia can consolidate their existing practices and further develop criminal justice administration for the benefit of their own society and that of the international community.
