Abstract
The average time from offense to completion for all defendants fell to 132 days in September 2000 from 142 days in February 2000 and 139 days in June 1999. There were also reductions in delay at each stage of proceedings. Considering only those defendants who were charged (and not those who received a summons to appear in court), the average time from charge to first listing fell to 6 days in September 2000 from 20 days in June 1999. However the average time from first listing to completion rose from 50 days in June 1999 to 52 days in September 2000. The average time from charge or laying of information to first listing fell to 8 days in September 2000 from 18 days in October 1999. However, there were increases in the average time from offense to charge or laying of information and from first listing to completion. The average time from offense to completion for defendants in summary non-motoring cases fell to 123 days in September 2000 from 133 days in June 1999. However, for defendants in summary motoring cases, the average time from offense to completion rose from 149 days in June 1999 to 150 days in September 2000. Figures, tables, notes
