This article discusses the critical role of a SWAT team leader.
Abstract
The duties of a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team commander extend past selecting, training, disciplining, and leading the team, to include involvement in such areas as budget, equipment, and department policies. The SWAT commander is responsible for developing and revising procedures regarding use of the team. The commander also deals with obtaining the equipment that team members will need to safely and effectively perform their assigned duties. Acquiring this equipment may often require balancing team needs and budgetary constraints. The commander is also involved in personnel selection and training. Finally, the commander is responsible for leading the team, setting team goals, and serving as a role model by demonstrating honesty, integrity, and fairness. The leader should also lead by example, being able to meet at least the minimum standards for entry level team members. While helping to develop the competence of individuals and of the team as a whole, the commander should also be preparing his replacement. In conclusion, the article observes that the team members' confidence in their commander can never be appointed--it must be earned.
