Abstract
A live, interactive teleconference with Vice President Al Gore on creating quality after-school programs was held in Chicago on Thursday, April 16, 1998. The kit contains two videotapes, one showing highlights of the teleconference, and one that presents the full teleconference. An accompanying collection of documents suggests ways that organizations can use the videotapes as a basis for their own conferences/workshops on creating quality after-school programs. The documents include: (1) descriptions of efforts to create after-school programs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities; (2) a checklist of preparatory activities; (3) a sample press release; (4) questions for community discussion; (5) a Fact Sheet; (6) Partner Contacts; (7) reprints of media articles on after-school activities; (8) details of after-school programs nationwide; and (9) funding guidelines and suggestions. In a unique public/private partnership, the Department of Education has proposed an expansion of Federal funding for after-school through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program. Funds available to communities would increase from $40 million in fiscal 1998 to $1 billion over 5 years, providing start-up funds to 4,000 communities.
