This videotape presents the perspectives of adolescents who are recovering from drug dependence and discusses the nature of addiction as a disease and the four phases of recovery from drug addiction.
Abstract
The videotape presents individual interviews and group discussions that explain addition as a disease and youths express their vulnerabilities, fear, pain, and joy. The youths discuss their preoccupation with drugs; their denial that they have a problem; the loss of control over their drug abuse; and the negative consequences they experience in relation to their family, friends, education, health, values, and happiness. They describe what they gold themselves or others to justify their use of alcohol and other drugs and the factors that prevented them from becoming honest about their drug use. They note the progression from recognition of these problems to the second phase of recovery, deciding to make changes in their lives. They also discuss the third phase of recovery in terms of building friendships based on trust and making amends to the persons they have harmed. They also explain the fourth recovery phase, which consists of looking ahead and preventing relapse.
