An in-depth review of the history of law enforcement is provided in Chapter 1, along with the recent changes in many areas of law enforcement, such as advances in equipment and training. Also covered are State and Federal law enforcement and the tradition of ethics. Chapter 2 introduces the types of patrol, which include automobile, foot, horse, and boat. The methods of patrol are beat, selective enforcement, saturation, and proactive or reactive patrol. Deterrence and team policing are also explained. The equipment and safety concerns of patrol, as presented in Chapter 3, include handguns, body armor, standard and additional equipment, splitting of partners, communication, and tactical errors. Chapter 4 focuses on mental and physical preparation, such as mental attitude, cardiovascular condition, strength training, flexibility, diet, smoking, and fitness programs. Contemporary issues such as child sexual abuse, gangs, and homelessness are addressed in Chapter 10.
